Spanish people have reacted furiously to the decision to acquit five men accused of raping a 14-yr-old girl who was unconscious after consuming drugs and alcohol. The Barcelona-based court found the men guilty of sexual abuse and sentenced them to 10-12 years in prison with a fine of 12,000 euros. However, the Judge decided that their actions could not be considered sexual assaults because the accused had not used violence or intimidation.
Under Spanish law, this is a legal obligation in order to be considered such an infringement. Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said that even if the government does not comment on court decisions, a change in legislation that makes clear consent mandatory is of paramount importance.
Social media users in Spain have expressed outrage at the court’s decision.
