“Utterly ridiculous” – Prices at the pumps are basically the same regardless of government token ‘cut’ in excise duty

Social media has been awash with petrol pump prices over the past week with people telling each other where the cheapest fuel in their area was.

The Government appears to be having a laugh at the moment, as prices at the pumps remain largely the same despite a purported ‘cut’ in excise duty on Wednesday night.

The price of a litre of unleaded remains just a whisker off €2 (€1.99) this morning. It’s unclear what excise duty has been cut, and by how much, as nothing has changed.

Many people say it’s just a token gesture from the government and that it’s absolute rubbish. They’re saying that the need to cut VAT along with other tax on the excise duty.
