Families have been left distraught and disgusted after headstones belonging to their loved ones were vandalised at a graveyard in Cork.

The Evening Echo reported that vandals inflicted thousands of euro worth of damage to headstones and sacred statues at St Catherine’s cemetery in Kilcully shortly around New Year’s Day.

In recent months there has been a rash of robberies at the Kilcully cemetery and headstones and ornaments have also been damaged while bottles of alcohol have been found at the graveyard.

Gardaí have launched an investigation however; CCTV footage only shows people entering and leaving the graveyard as cameras only cover the carpark at the cemetery.

So far a motive for the continued acts of vandalism has not been determined.
