Varadkar claims that ‘No indication Ireland being penalised’ for Gaza stance

There is no indication that Ireland will be penalized in any way for the position we are taking in calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the Prime Minister said, reports RTE.

No Irish citizens have left Gaza since the first foreigners were allowed to leave the besieged enclave last week.

There’re “about 40 Irish citizens in Gaza” the Prime Minister said yesterday.

In a speech in the Dáil, People Before Profit MP Paul Murphy claimed that Irish citizens were being held hostage by Israel in Gaza.

In response, the prime minister said that only 20% of the approximately 8,000 foreigners living in Gaza had entered Egypt through the Rafah border crossing, reports RTE.

He added that Ireland’s position on the need for an immediate ceasefire would not change.

“Evacuations are being managed on a country by country basis and it will take time for this process to be completed,” Mr Varadkar said, reports RTE.

“The names of all Irish citizens in Gaza who have asked to be included on the list of those two evacuations have been submitted to the relevant authorities. We don’t know when they’ll be able to leave,” he said, reports RTE.
