The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as offered his good wishes to Northern Ireland’s new First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly.
“Huge” is how Michelle O’Neill described the symbolism of today in an interview with RTÉ’s Six One News.
She said: “The northern state was built in such a way with an in-built unionist majority, an Irish nationalist was never supposed to come to the fore, certainly never supposed to hold the position of First Minister,” reports RTE.
“So it’s a huge day, because from my parents’, my grandparents’ generation, never thought a day like this would come. So I think that’s why it’s so significant and why it means so much to the people, and it also speaks to the changes happening right across Ireland right now,” she added, reports RTE.
