Varadkar: I have full confidence in Catherine Martin after RTÉ Chair resignation debacle

Following the resignation of the RTÉ Board Chair, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Micheál Martin have both expressed confidence in Minister for Media Catherine Martin, reports RTE.

Following Ms. Martin’s appearance on RTÉ’s Prime Time last night, where she declined to convey her confidence in Ms. Ní Raghallaigh, Siún Ní Raghallaigh announced her resignation in a statement.

Ms. Martin said that Ms. Ní Raghallaigh had “misinformed” her twice this week about the Board’s acceptance of recent leave packages, and that was why she had requested a meeting.

Ms Martin praised Ms Ní Raghallaigh for her contribution “at a time of unprecedented crisis at the national broadcaster” and recognised her departure as Chair of the RTÉ Board in a statement released this morning.

She continued: “At this critical time for RTÉ, it is imperative that we continue the important process of restoring trust in the organisation,” reports RTE.

“As Ms Ní Raghallaigh stated, there is an urgent need for the transformation process to continue and a sustainable funding model put in place – I am deeply committed to this,” reports RTE.
