Varadkar is considering bailing out RTE with taxpayers’ money “with conditions”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has suggested there may be terms for a potential bailout or emergency funding for RTÉ, reports RTE.

Speaking at the lunchtime premiere of “Housing for All” at Government House, Varadkar was asked about possible funding for the national broadcaster.

“We all know RTÉ is in trouble at the moment, not just financially but reputationally”, the Fine Gael leader said, reports RTE.

He confirmed that “longstanding request from RTÉ” for possible additional support.

However, when asked about the separate issue of a possible “bailout” for RTÉ, Mr Varadkar said: “if that arises we’ll have to deal with it then,” reports RTE.

Mr Varadkar also said he believed former RTÉ chief executive Dee Forbes should join the Oireachtas committee to clarify his role in the controversy.

He said he didn’t want to see a constant “drip drip” of information on the story.

Asked twice whether she thought Ms Forbes should continue to attend an Oireachtas committee meeting when she was well enough, Varadkar said: “I believe the former director general should attend, hopefully when she makes a recovery,” reports RTE.
