Varadkar says Flood-affected businesses are in line for big payments of €40,000

Businesses affected by flooding in parts of east Cork are to pay “at least” €40,000 as early as next week under proposals unveiled by the Government, reports RTE.

Business Minister Simon Coveney will present a note to cabinet on Tuesday outlining the new scheme, which will run alongside the existing one and offers payments of between €5,000 and €20,000.

Sources with knowledge of the scheme say the scale of the damage means the total payout will exceed €40,000 in many cases and could exceed €50,000 for some affected businesses.

About 100 flooded businesses are expected to be in line for increased payments, which will be administered by the Red Cross.

Weather warning

The proposals come after Met Eireann issued an orange rain warning for Kilkenny, Wexford and Waterford and a yellow warning for 13 counties.

The orange warning for Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford will come into effect from 4am tomorrow and will remain in force for 24 hours.

Forecasters warned of possible flooding, hazardous travel conditions and poor visibility after three separate warnings came into force.

A yellow rain warning has been issued for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Galway. It will start today at 6:00 p.m. and will last until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, reports RTE.

More than 7,000 sandbags have already been distributed in the Middleton/East Cork area.

The main road in Carrigaline will be closed from 9.30pm today until 8am tomorrow.

“The east Cork area is of greatest concern based on current predictions. Property owners across the county are advised to take all necessary precautions to safeguard their property. In the event of river levels rising to a level of concern, the Council will endeavour to advise residents in areas that may be at greatest risk,” it said, reports RTE.

According to forecasts, the weather will not change for the next few days.
