Varadkar says reduction in life saving air ambulance service will not cause loss of life

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has defended his governments decision to cut back air ambulance services saying that reduced services will not result in loss of life.

The national air ambulance service which is based in Athlone will now be cut off for 16-days between November and February 2020 the Sun reports.

The Taoiseach announced his assumption that the reduction in the life saving service will not cause loss of life while addressing the Department of Defence’s new contingency plans. Meanwhile the Department of Defence itself has said that the decision to curtail the air ambulance service was due to training and staffing issues.

The Defence Forces have been dealing with major issues surrounding funding, recruitment and retention of personnel in recent years.
