Vehicle accidents and fans are the most common cause of workplace deaths

According to recently released data from the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), 43 persons died in events related to their jobs in 2023, reports RTE.

In contrast, 28 deaths were reported in 2022.

Out of the 43 workers who passed away in 2023, 51% were older than 55 and 53% were independent contractors.

Eleven deaths happened in the construction industry, and sixteen deaths were related to farming.

More than two-thirds of all fatalities in 2023 were related to these two areas, reports RTE.

The two most common causes of fatal workplace accidents in the previous year were operating machinery and falling from heights.

In 2023, there were 43 fatalities in total; 39 of them were men and 4 were women.

“As we reflect on the last year and the 43 people who lost their lives in work-related incidents, we first and foremost think of their families and friends who have tragically lost a loved one in 2023,” said HSA Assistant Chief Executive Mark Cullen, reports RTE.
