The much hated Water charge system has now been officially scrapped this afternoon after TDs in the Dáil voted overwhelmingly in favour of abolishing the Bill introduced by the previous Government.
It is understood TDs passed the abolishment motion by 96 to 48. The motion now means that all charges must be scrapped except those for excessive usage.
The new ruling will also mean there will be a referendum on public ownership, and that meters are to be installed in all new builds.
