A photo circulating on Twitter which shows a pitched tent in Dublin city centre with a deliveroo box and a bicycle beside it has sparked shock and disgust as people are holding it as an example of the “working homeless”.
The working poor is a common phrase but the new phrase “working homeless” is now trending with politicians rushing to capitalise on the shocking image such as Green Party Councillor Lawrence Hemmings who tweeted
“Bicycle locked. Deliveroo bag ready for the day’s work. The new working homeless.
Government is failing to deliver public and affordable housing and failing to control rents.#homelessindublin”
Ironic when one considers the Green Party oversaw the banking collapse and bank guarantee which plunged Ireland into EU and ECB imposed austerity.

Home and rent prices are in Dublin in particular, but also in large urban areas across the country, are approaching pre-crash levels and exceeding them in some places with the massive property bubble in the country ballooning to greater sizes every week.
As 10,000 Irish citizens are now officially homeless, with many tens of thousands of more struggling to remain in their homes, the Irish government is content to allow vulture funds to continue to acquire vast swathes of property and tranches of mortgages.
