Warning issued after young woman loses €1,000 through QR code parking

After a lady was defrauded of €1,000 at a Pay and Display machine in Wicklow via a QR code scam, a warning has been issued for drivers, reports The Mirror.

On certain Pay and Display machines, the cunning con artists superimposed a fake QR code over the actual code, leading the user to a phoney website that asks for credit card information and other personal information.

During the weekend, a client was tricked out of €1,000 by scanning a QR code to pay for parking.

“Be careful everyone, this happened in Greystones. The lady’s daughter was scammed out of €1000, using a QR code that she scanned to pay for parking,” she wrote in a post on social media alongside a video of the fake QR code, reports The Mirror.

According to a Payzone representative, the company was informed of the situation and the scam was reported to the Gardaí. Payzone is presently working to remove any fraudulent codes.

“We are aware of this and have reported it to the Gardaí. We are urging motorists not to scan any QR Codes,” a spokesperson replied, reports The Mirror.

“We are currently removing all affected signage. If you have entered your card details on a fraudulent website, we recommend that you contact your bank immediately to cancel your card, email [email protected] with details of the QR code and the URL (website) you were directed to so that we can continue to get these sites taken down. You should also report the incident to An Garda Síochána. The safest way to make a payment is via the Payzone app which is unaffected by this issue.
