Water charges will stay, Junior Minister Simon Harris TD says

Despite massive popular revolts and a huge ongoing popular backlash, Junior Minister Simon Harris TD insists that water charges are here to stay.

He also went on to say that 61% of people have paid their water bills.

The bold claims come two days after the Righ2Water campaign organized about 30 anti-water charges rallies nationwide, with further protests planned until the charges are scrapped.

The Wicklow TD claimed that “We’re not going to reverse water charges because we don’t believe in keeping all of the tax on people going to work and on their pay packet.”

In response to the claims, socialist TD Paul Murphy said that “Four in 10 people have never paid any water charges and 50% are boycotting some or part of the bill at this stage.”

“I think people know the water charges can be defeated and austerity can be defeated by a combination of massive protests, street movements and boycotts, but also using the election to channel the water charges movement.”
