Government coalition parties have been urged by Taoiseach Simon Harris to “not rewrite history” by attacking one another during the election campaign, reports Breaking News.
After 14 years with a Fine Gael minister, he was commenting after Fianna Fáil justice spokesman Jim O’Callaghan stated that the Department of Justice requires “new political control and direction.”
Using the party’s election slogan to attack Fine Gael’s record on justice, Mr. O’Callaghan claimed there was a “question mark” over whether the party was the party of law and order, reports Breaking News.
The two biggest coalition parties have been publicly arguing during the opening week of the election campaign. Micheal Martin, the leader of Fianna Fáil, said he was taken aback by the tone of the Fine Gael assaults.
When questioned on Friday morning about Mr. O’Callaghan’s assertion that she had accepted a number of his immigration and law and order measures, Fine Gael Justice Minister Helen McEntee retaliated.
She told reporters in Dublin on Friday, “I think there are probably women all over the country who will understand what it’s like when men try to claim credit for their work,” reports Breaking News.
Mr. O’Callaghan, who was speaking at the local launch of Fianna Fáil’s plans to crack down on crime, said that the Justice Department required “a new energy,” a Fine Gael campaign slogan.
