“We want to keep our country safe” – Cork protest against migrant centre draws large crowds

A huge protest took place in Cork this afternoon with many saying that they’re doing all they can to keep their country safe, especially from unknown numbers of undocumented migrants coming into Ireland.

Recently, a  large protest took place in Athlone against a proposed accommodation centre for up to 1,000 asylum seekers at Lissywollen. Organized by local groups, the demonstration began at 2 p.m. at Athlone Civic Centre, with marchers chanting “Athlone Says No” as they proceeded to the site. The protest reflects ongoing local concerns about the scale of the proposed facility, which would initially house international protection applicants in tents before transitioning to modular units.

Local councillors, including Frankie Keena and Paul Hogan, have voiced opposition, citing strained local services and lack of government consultation. Some residents expressed frustration, with concerns about safety and integration. The Department of Integration defends the plan, noting an urgent need to accommodate nearly 3,000 applicants currently without shelter. Gardaí were present to monitor the peaceful gathering, and no incidents were reported.

The protest follows a series of local actions, including a public meeting attended by over 300 people and a High Court challenge launched by councillors against the development, arguing it lacks proper environmental assessments.
