The former housewife and creator of the multi-million Weight Watchers brand, Jean Nidetch, has sadly passed away aged 91.

Nidetch held the first Weight Watchers meeting in the sitting room of her house in Queens, New York, thus taking the first step in a long career to help people lose weight.

Her first Weight Watchers plan was created with the help of the New York Board of Health, and her early meetings were mostly attended by female friends and neighbours.

Nidetch coined Weight Watchers’ catch phrase “It’s choice – not chance – that determines your destiny.”

She is survived by her son, David Nidetch and three grandchildren.
