Welcome to Ireland 2021: Dublin Soup runs for homeless could be shut down due to HSE regulations “designed for the restaurant business and the food industry”

What started out as a few volunteers getting together to help and support homeless people in Dublin has now become an essential service for the homeless population.

This week, two homeless soup runs in Dublin received letters after HSE inspectors sent a list of regulations that the must follow if they want to continue feeding the homeless .

The Homeless Street Cafe posted a message saying “To say we are devastated doesn’t even cover it”.

Denise Carroll, who co-founded the Homeless Street Cafe with her mother Anne Carroll five years ago, said the regulations could bring an end to their service according to BreakingNews.ie

“Some of these regulations are designed for the restaurant business and the food industry. They referred to us as a food business, but we are not. We are not a charity. We are a group of like-minded people who wanted to do something for people who are hungry, using our own resources … it is not possible to adhere to the regulations”.

Friends Helping Friends, another volunteer led Dublin based soup run received similar correspondence from the HSE.
