New and improved body armour is being introduced nationwide for public order gardaí, reports Breaking News.
Frontline officers attached to the Garda National Public Order Unit (GNPOU) will be issued with the upgraded equipment. There are currently more than 1,500 trained public order gardaí, reports Breaking News.
The rollout includes an initial investment exceeding €3.6 million and will provide personally issued body armour to all GNPOU operators. The full rollout is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2026.
The upgraded body armour features, reports Breaking News.
- Enhanced fire-resistant material with built-in metatarsal and ankle protection;
- A waistcoat-style carrier with multiple adjustment points to improve fit and mobility;
- MOLLE (Modular, Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment) webbing to allow the carrying of tactical gear;
- Click-fast docks to enable seamless integration of Tetra radios and Body-Worn Cameras;
- Protection against slashing, stabbing and impact.
An Garda Síochána said each public order member will be fitted on site for the new equipment, ensuring the armour can be properly adjusted to each individual Garda, reports Breaking News.
The armour will be worn at three different levels, in line with a graduated response, ranging from soft cap deployment through to full public order Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
