A tented encampment has cropped up outside the International Protection Office in Dublin, and among the primary worries of the dozen or so asylum seekers living there is a lack of basic sanitary amenities, reports RTE.

A “nationwide shortage” led the Department of Integration to discontinue housing all asylum applicants on December 4.

The most recent statistics, which were released yesterday, indicate that since then, 1,382 male applicants for international protection have arrived in Ireland; 970 of them have not received an accomodation offer.

Consequently, the International Protection Office on Mount Street is currently surrounded by around forty tents.

There are those who have been waiting for accommodations for almost a month, reports RTE.

The men who stay there on a regular basis talked about the difficulties they encounter.

The most prominent ones include the climate, verbal mistreatment, and the absence of a lavatory or a place to wash. Urine is thus odorous in the surrounding region.

One Afghan national said: “I’ve been here around 30 days. Some people are here for 45 days and more than that and since then we are lying on the roads. It’s raining, you can see, all the time in Ireland,” reports RTE.

“Also sometimes people come and literally abuse you verbally. Also someone stole my purse as well. I had some important cards, my documents, as well as a little bit of pocket money,” reports RTE.
