“What about the Irish homeless?” Migrants are getting €259 million to pay income and integration funding

There’s been much uproar on social media over migrants getting close to €300 million income and integration funding. Many people believe that Irish homeless people should be looked after first and foremost before anyone coming into our country.

Budget 2022, delivered by the Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Green coalition government will see 2022 funding for asylum seekers rise from €218 Million to €259 Million. That’s nearly 16% increase over 2021.

The reason given for the funding by the Green Party Minister, Roderic O’Gorman states;

“€28 million allocated in Budget 2022 will begin the process of transitioning applicants out of the current system of accommodation and into more appropriate housing in the community”.

“The Budget allocation will also focus on putting in place integration supports at a local level including an income support payment so that applicants can live their lives independently. It will put in place an integration fund to support applicants to integrate into their new communities and look to deliver benefits for the local community”.

There are no further details as to how the government will house asylum seekers “in the community” without causing rents to increase further and make it more difficult for private and public renters to access affordable accommodation.

The remaining €231 Million funding for 2022 will be spent on continuing annual costs to fund the Asylum seeker system in Ireland.
