“Where are you going?” Gardai to hold multiple checkpoints across Ireland on the run up to New Year’s Eve

People will see themselves being met with multiple checkpoints around the country if they travel outside of their county, the gardai say.

If you want to travel outside your county, you have a very small number of reasons that you’ll be allowed to do so. These include, essential visits to the vulnerable, medical and leaving where you stayed for Christmas.

Inter-county travel is now forbidden as Level 5 restrictions come into effect.

The Covid-19 situation has deteriorated considerably across Ireland, with almost 1,300 new cases detected on Saturday alone.

A range of new restrictions will come into effect on January 1.

It’s understood that gardai are now holding multiple checkpoints around the country to enforce what many on social media are describing as “draconian restrictions”.
