WHO chief thanks Ireland for its ‘moral leadership’ on gathering Gaza conflict

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, expressed his gratitude towards Ireland for their “moral leadership” on the Israeli attack in Gaza.

He made the comments during his visit to Dublin, prior to a pandemic convention.

The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, expressed his hope that diplomatic efforts would be made in the coming days and weeks to encourage a humanitarian ceasefire, following the UK and Germany’s strengthened stance.

Speaking in Dublin, Dr Tedros said: “We also thank Ireland for its moral leadership on the crisis in Gaza. WHO is on the ground doing what we can but we cannot truly protect and promote the health of the people of Gaza without a ceasefire as the Taoiseach underlined. Without a ceasefire, there is no peace and without peace, there is no health,” reports Breaking News.

He added: “In so many places, the absence of health (is) because of the absence of peace, and vice versa. But in our fractured world, health is one of the few ways in which nations from across the geopolitical spectrum can come together to find common ground,” reports Breaking News.
