By 2031, the Luas could be expanded to Dublin’s Finglas.
The proposal would run for four stops from Broombridge, and the transport minister is seeking agreement from his cabinet colleagues on Tuesday, reports Breaking News.
Trams from Charlestown, the furthest station, to College Green are predicted to take 30 minutes.
According to Transport Minister Eamon Ryan, the project was comparatively simple.
“This extends the Luas line, which currently runs as far as Broombridge, it will currently run north from there. Four kilometres, through Finglas village, connecting towards the M50 where we would put a park and ride site in to try and get people out of their cars and into public transport. It will be transformative for the 60,000 people along the route, Finglas particularly, and it will improve their journey time from the city centre from about 45 minutes to 30 minutes,” reports Breaking News.
The Finglas Luas line was supposed to be finished by 2036 as part of the Greater Dublin Area’s Transport Strategy.
A favourable Cabinet decision would enable Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the State agency in charge of building the line, to request An Bord Pleanála’s planning permission for its construction, potentially delaying its anticipated completion by a number of years, reports Breaking News.
A rehabilitation strategy for the Jamestown Business Park, 43 hectares of industrial area north of Finglas village, was approved by Dublin City Council last year, giving the project a boost.
A population of up to 8,000 people might be accommodated by the 3,800 dwellings that could be built on the property, reports Breaking News.
