Winds of up to 130km/h will batter Ireland today

An orange weather alert will remain in place until tomorrow, due to dangerous winds sweeping across the country.

Gale force winds are forecast nationwide today, bringing about thunder and wintry showers. People living in coastal areas in particular have been advised to be extra vigilant, due to high tides and waves crashing ashore.

The west and north of the country will bear the brunt of the weather onslaught.

The stormy conditions will will ease by tomorrow, Tuesday, but the weather is expected to remain very unsettled for the rest of the week.

Tomorrow will dawn with deep cold, and windy but bright conditions will be predominant. The winds will ease throughout the day. Temperatures will sway between 5C and 8C.

Wednesday will be a lot milder, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 12C. Heavy rain is forecast for Wednesday night though, clearing by sunrise.

Cold conditions will return on Thursday, with sunny spells and showers of rain and hail. That pattern will continue on Friday, but milder conditions are likely over the coming weekend.
