A woman in her 40s and a teenage girl have appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court charged in connection with a serious assault in Co Tipperary that left a 29-yr-old woman in a critical condition in hospital.
The teenager, who cannot be named because of her age, is charged with assault causing serious harm to Scarlett Faulkner. The alleged attack occurred on the side of the road near the village of Birdhill last Saturday.
Detective Garda Andrea Coonan from Thurles Garda Station gave evidence of formally arresting and charging the girl. When cautioned, the teenager said she understood the charges.
The woman, who also cannot be named by order of the court, faces four charges: violent disorder, reckless endangerment, and two counts of burglary. The offences are alleged to have taken place during a 24-hour period of serious violent crime.
Garda Seamus Kelly told the court that the woman made no reply when charged and cautioned.
Gardaí opposed bail for both defendants, citing the serious nature of the charges and the risk of further feud-related activity.
Detective Garda Coonan told the court that Scarlett Faulkner suffered extensive head injuries in the assault and remains in a critical condition in hospital.
“There are grave concerns for her health,” she said.
Judge Carol Anne Coolican refused bail for both the woman and the teenager due to the gravity of the charges.
She remanded the teenage girl in detention and the woman in custody. Both are due to appear via videolink before Tipperary District Court sitting in Thurles on 1 April.
