A 53-year-old woman has sadly passed away after being swept off rocks and into the water by a freak wave earlier today.
The incident happened at Ballyreen, south of Fanore, on the Clare coast.
It is understood the woman was fishing when a freak wave dragged her into the sea. Her body was located by a Doolin Coast Guard crew about an hour later. Environmental conditions were reportedly very poor at the time.
The woman is believed to be from Eastern European origin, living in Tipperary.
Ballyreen’s coastal area is particularly treacherous, and has been the scene of similar tragedies in recent years.
