Woman goes on trial in the North accused of murdering two small children

A woman is on trial at Antrim Crown Court accused with the murder and attempted murder of her two young children.

The 41-yr-old, who cannot be identified, pleaded not guilty to the murder of her son, aged two years and 10 months, and the attempted murder of her other son, aged 11 months, on March 2nd 2020.

According to RTE, Judge Patricia Smyth told the jury that there’s no doubt that the defendant stabbed the children, but what is in issue is his state of mind at the time of the events.

Before the trial began, Judge Patricia Smyth warned the jury to be prepared to hear evidence that might upset you. The Judge said that they must put aside any pity, prejudice or emotion and calmly assess the evidence.

The jury heard the woman wrote several notes on the morning of March 2, 2020, in one of which she wrote that she had given the children medication because she didn’t want them to feel pain.

The trial is ongoing.
