The two children, aged five and seven were left alone on the platform as the train set off for Dublin.
This was the Sligo to Connolly station route, the commuter train had stopped at 8am for passengers bound for the capital to board.
The female in charge of the children, believed to be their mother was forced to tug on the emergency cord.
A spokesperson for Irish Rail revealed that the train door had closed behind the woman once she had entered the train.
The emergency cord was pulled and the train returned to the station where the children, being looked after by Irish Rail staff, were returned to their mother.
