A woman whose body was discovered in her Co Waterford home last Monday may have been dead for up to two weeks before being found.
Carmel Robinson, who was in her late 60s, was discovered by gardaí at her home in Brookside, in the seaside village of Passage East, reports Breaking News.
Neighbours of Ms Robinson — who grew up in the area and is believed to have spent most of her career in the UK working as a civil servant — raised the alarm after noticing she had not been seen for some time.
She lived alone with her pet dog in a semi-detached home near the former post office. The dog was also found dead inside the house, reports Breaking News.
Gardaí have ruled out foul play following the discovery of her body.
Local Independent councillor Declan Barry said the community was “shocked” to learn of Ms Robinson’s death “in a village where everyone knows everyone, my heart goes out to her relatives”, reports Breaking News.
Cllr Barry added that “it’s so sad in this day and age to think that this lady” may have been deceased in her home for some time before being found.
He noted the decline in local amenities, saying: “The post office was closed, there once was three pubs, now there’s one which opens part-time and the nearest place to buy anything is four kilometres away,” reports Breaking News.
“People have even taken to taking the car ferry which runs from Passage East across to Ballyhack, Co Wexford to buy food items,” he added.
In a statement, gardaí said they are “investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a deceased woman in her 60s at a domestic residence in Passage East, Co Waterford on Monday”, reports Breaking News.
The Coroner’s Office was notified, and Ms Robinson’s body was removed to University Hospital Waterford (UHW), where a postmortem examination will be carried out in due course.
Garda investigations remain ongoing, reports Breaking News.
