Before their unique first Christmas at home together, a girl who is thought to be the smallest surviving preterm baby born on the island of Ireland has been called her parents’ “little miracle,” reports Breaking News.

On June 28, at 26 weeks gestation, Raina Gilmore was delivered via Caesarean section, weighing 378g, or less than a pound.

During her first few days in the newborn intensive care unit at Belfast’s Royal Maternity Hospital, her weight dropped to 360g.

Parents Rachel, 25, and Marcus, 33, of Ballyclare, County Antrim, were informed that their child only had a 10% chance of surviving.

“Whenever that day actually came, I don’t even know how to explain it, it was like all our Christmases rolled into one,” said Mrs Gilmore, a self-employed beautician, reports Breaking News.

She added: “It was lovely because all the nurses and doctors stood out and clapped for her leaving. My mum and dad were there too. It was just one of the best days of our lives to finally get her home,” reports Breaking News.
