World leaders, except Russian President Vladimir Putin, have poured tributes for former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who has passed away aged 91.

Mr. Gorbachev, who was in power between 1985 and 1991, brought fundamental reforms to the Soviet Union. He became known for his liberal approach to national politics, namely glasnost and perestroika (openness and restructuring). Mr. Gorbachev is credited with ending the long-running Cold War, and thus making the world a far safer place.

Current Russian President Vladimir Putin openly despised Mr. Gorbachev, whom he believes is responsible for the breakup of the former Soviet Union, something that Putin never got over. Mr. Gorbachev meanwhile also openly despised Mr. Putin, whom he considered a destabilizing force for world peace.
