A 15-year-old boy has died after getting into trouble in a lake in southeast London, according to police, reports Sky.
Emergency services were called shortly after 3pm on Friday to Beckenham Place Park in the borough of Lewisham.
The Metropolitan Police said the teenager “was recovered from the lake” at around 10.42pm that evening, reports Sky.
“He was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. His death is being treated as unexpected but not believed to be suspicious,” the police said, reports Sky.
The boy’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Police initially stated the teenager was 16, but later corrected his age to 15, reports Sky.
In their earlier update, officers said emergency personnel launched a search operation and the park was cleared of the public.
Beckenham Place Park, which straddles the Lewisham and Bromley boroughs, spans around 240 acres, according to its official website, reports Sky.
The park’s lake is described as being 285 metres long and reaching depths of up to 3.5 metres.
It was created for open-water swimming and paddle boarding.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said on Friday: “We were called at 3.02pm this afternoon to reports of a person in the water, reports Sky.
“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and members of our hazardous area response team.”
Authorities have not yet disclosed how the boy entered the lake or if he was with others at the time, reports Sky.
