Young garda sent forward to trial on major corruption charges

A 36-year-old Garda charged with 111 counts of alleged corruption has been sent to trial.

Joseph Doyle, of The Hawthorns, Kilcock, Co. Kildare, was also charged with money laundering.

According to RTE, the charge alleges that, in his role as an inspector of public vehicles at various locations in Co Meath, had induced named persons at various locations giving him sums between €20 and €250 totalling €855 in the form of checks or cash for the fictitious brake tests or for charity on various dates between 2018 and 2020.

He was also charged with money laundering, depositing money at a post office and bank knowing they were the proceeds of crime.

Mr Doyle has also been accused of refusing to allow a Garda to photograph him at a Garda station in Lucan, Co Dublin.

The national broadcaster reports that Detective Sergeant James King testified in Trim District Court that he provided Mr. Doyle with a book of evidence.

An additional charge was added to the evidence book and Sergeant King said he did not respond when charges were filed against the defendant.

Judge Cephas Power sent Mr. Doyle to Trim Circuit Court on February 18. Mr. Doyle received free legal assistance.
