The Irish Defence Forces are seeking to recruit 1,500 personnel over the next two years, 600 throughout 2016 and the rest over 2017.
According to Minister Simon Coveney, the move “will rejuvenate the defence forces.”
The Irish Army will remain at around 95,000-strong permanent defence force.
