Zappone turned down €100,000 a year job after it emerged she held a party in a hotel for 50 people last month which included Leo Varadkar as a guest

The former minister for children Katherine Zappone has fallen flat on her face after major backlash over the past number of days to her appointment for a massive government-appointed job.

Zappone said she will not be accepting the appointment by the Government to be the UN Special Envoy on Freedom of Opinion and Expression.

According to the Indepentent, Zappone held a party almost a week before the appointment in a plush Dublin hotel with 50 people in attendance, one of them being the Tanaiste and Fine Gael leader, Leo Varadkar.

According to RTE a statement, she said: “While I am honoured to have been appointed by the Government to be the Special Envoy on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, it is clear that criticism of the appointment process has impacted the legitimacy of the role itself.

“It is my conviction that a Special Envoy role can only be of real value to Ireland and to the global community if the appointment is acceptable to all parties,” she said.

“For this reason, I have decided not to accept this appointment, and I have communicated my decision to the Minister for Foreign Affairs,” the statement added.
