Minister for Defence Helen McEntee stated that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Ireland was “safe and successful”, reports RTE.
This follows reports of multiple drones detected within a no-fly zone near Howth as the Ukrainian leader arrived in Dublin earlier in the week, reports RTE.
She said that all factors connected to the incident are now being examined and assessed by both the Defence Forces and An Garda Síochána.
Ms McEntee noted in a statement that the Defence Forces “successfully provided support” to the Garda-led security plan, reports RTE.
She added that she believes Ireland must “continuously improve our defence capabilities in light of the changed geopolitical landscape since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”, reports RTE.
Ms McEntee also said the Government “will ensure that all necessary security measures are taken during Ireland’s EU Presidency”, reports RTE.
EU leaders, the UK Prime Minister, and heads of other European states outside the EU are all expected to travel to Ireland next year as part of the country’s six-month presidency of the European Union.
“While security arrangements for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU next year are primarily the responsibility of An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces stand ready to support the gardaí where appropriate, including through the provision of highly trained personnel and other key capabilities,” the minister added, reports RTE.
