300 people attended the funeral of the elderly man who had received no visitors for five years prior to his death.
John McMullen died in Moyglare Nursing Home in Maynooth and the workers were concerned that the old man would have no one to attend his funeral.
A public appeal was made to locate the relatives of the deceased and instead of locating them, 300 members of the public joined together and in solidarity buried the old man.
According to a Kildare Now reader the occasion was “very moving”, with a “guard of honour provided by Defence Forces veterans”.
Songs such as The Voyage by Christy Moore and The Derry Air were played as the man was taken to his final place of rest.
