Budget 2018: Sugar tax will be 30c per litre, and price of cigarettes rises to €12

Smokers and fans of fizzy drinks are the first cohort of people hit by Budget 2018.

From midnight tonight, cigarettes will cost 50c more, so the price of a packet now stands at a whooping €12.

Also, the much-vaunted ‘Sugar tax’ is finally here, which adds 30c to a litre of drinks containing over 8g of sugar per 100ml.

Drinks containing between 5g and 8g of sugar per 100ml will have a reduced tax of 20c per litre.
