The hosts Russia have knocked out Spain after they beat them 4-3 on penalties.

In a game that was far from exciting it was the Russian Goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved two in a tense penalty shootout to send his team through to the quarter finals.

Spain who will feel hard done by given that they had the lions share of the possession throughout the game, were given the lead when Ignashevich turned a cross into his own net on the 12th minute.

However the Spanish failed to capitalise on their dominance and payed the price when Dzyuba scored a penalty on the 41st minute after Pique handled from Dzyuba’s header.

The second half which seen Spain dominate throughout resulted in no change to the scoreline and a spirited Russian side were given their reward of extra time after they held the Spanish out.

Extra time seen more of the same and neither side produce anything of significance to break the deadlock, although Aspas did test Akinfeev with a low volley just outside the six yard box.

The game which seen both sides tiring ended level and the decisive moments occurred in the penalty shootout when that man Akinfeev saved from koke and Aspas to send his side through to the last eight.
