A French man has become one of the first to be fined under new laws aimed at tackling sexual harassment and misconduct towards women.

The man who also recieved a three month prison sentence after he was found guilty of physically abusing a bus driver, will be fined €300 after he sexually harrased a woman onboard a bus in Paris suburb of Evry last Wednesday.

According to reports in the French press, the man aged in his 30s was given the fine after he inappropriately approached a 21 year old woman whilst travelling on the bus.

It is understood the man who was visibly drunk, sexually harrased the woman by slapping her on the buttocks, before calling her a “whore” and making derogatory comments about her breast size.

The punishment comes after the French Government passed new laws earlier this year that will see those suspected of sexually harassing women being heavily punished.

It is believed the new laws have come into effect as the country is targeting the ongoing issue of sexual misconduct against women who have been repeatedly harrased or assaulted by men in recent years.

Under the new laws authorities are now allowed to issue on the spot fines for inappropriate behaviour which includes any comments on a woman’s looks or attire.

The new laws also forbids unwanted following, catcalling, intrusive questions, and upskirting.
