Tragic Jake Brennan tragically lost his life after being mowed down by a vehicle moving at almost 50 km/h through a housing estate on Linstown Road, Kilkenny, on June 12, 2014.

Ever since the tragic event, his parents have been campaigning for the introduction of a mandatory 20 km/h speed limit across housing estates nationwide.

Delivering his verdict, Coroner Brendan Doyle said he would write to the acting minister for transport, recommending the change.

Collisions at 50kmh usually yield a fatality rate of more than 80%. In contrast, the death rate drops to almost zero at 20kmh.

The inquest also recommended the introduction of clear signage of housing estates, as the ambulance crew had to drive twice around the estate looking for the right address.
