Licence to inspect – Department of Communications submit proposals that will see a private company carry-out TV licence inspections

According to reports today the Department of Communication a is looking to restructure how the current operation of TV licence inspectors is ran by creating a privatised system which will see inspectors being hired by an individual company rather than An Post.

The latest proposals which have been submitted before the Dail by the Communications Minister Denis Naughten will see the contract for private inspectors being put out to tender rather than being carried out by An Post.

Under the new system the private company chosen to carry out inspections would then hire their own personnel to carry out regular inspections across the country.

The Department also say the new move would be beneficial to An Post as it would go along way to easing the current financial burden currently imposed on the company.

According to recent figures it is believed the current inspection service costs the company around €12 million per year.

Minister Naughten also claims the new system would help the department reclaim around €40 million in unpaid fees each year.
