The British luxury brand Burberry has burned clothes, accessories and perfume worth a staggering €32 million to “protect its brand”, according to its annual report.
The practice is said to now be a common instance right across the industry to protect against counterfeiting.
According to RTE, the drastic step is taken to protect intellectual property and prevent products being stolen or sold at a much discounted price.
Burberry said in a statement:
“Burberry has careful processes in place to minimise the amount of excess stock we produce,”
“On the occasions when disposal of products is necessary, we do so in a responsible manner and we continue to seek ways to reduce and revalue our waste.”
