The AA and the Gardai have advised motorists to be extra vigilant on the roads this weekend as temperatures dip to -3c across the country.
The treacherous conditions will produce widespread frost and black ice and many roads, especially B roads. A Status Yellow warning for snow and ice remains in place.
Met Eireann have said that the polar air should shift over the coming 24 hours and more moderate and timely cold temperatures will return.
Meanwhile bookies have slashed their odds on a White Christmas.
