New study shows 30% of patients presenting in hospital A&E departments at the weekend have alcohol-related injuries




A study conducted by staff at University Hospital Galway, in conjunction with researchers from NUI Galway shows that 30% of people presenting at hospital A&E departments at the weekend have alcohol-related injuries.4

According to RTE News, the study examined 29 Emergency Departments around the country and say in general 6% of patients who presented in A&E departments had alcohol-related injuries, but that figure rose dramatically to 30% at the weekend.

The study found that most alcohol-related injured patients were men who and that they were brought to hospital by ambulance. It also found that most of the patients discharged themselves even though doctors and nurses advised them not to.

The study examined a total of 3,194 patients across the the country.
