A baby born prematurely died after his mother was sent home, accused of using the ambulance service as a ‘taxi’.

A midwife at the Royal Bolton Hospital reportedly made the insensitive comments, after the mother decided to call an ambulance due to severe abdominal pain while pregnant.

Upon arriving at the hospital, a midwife said the pain was due to an urinary infection. The pregnant mother was sent home after being informed that the ambulance ride had cost the NHS about £300.

The baby was born prematurely at home shortly afterwards. He was rushed back to hospital and put in an incubator, but sadly died.

Both the NHS and the midwife have formally apologised to the mother and her family.
