Stargazers delight: Lunar eclipse will give Ireland a blood moon on Monday

An eclipse on Monday January 21st will mean a ‘blood moon’ will be visible over the whole of Ireland.

This will be first time such a lunar event will seen for Ireland in 14 years and Astronomy Ireland has urged people to make the most of it.

The Full Moon on Monday morning will appear with an eerily red colouration as the Earth passes between it and the Sun. As the Sun’s rays pass through the planets atmosphere they taken on a red tint, this is also the effect that causes sun-sets and rises to appear red.

The moon on Monday will also be what’s called a ‘super-moon’ which is when the satellite will be at its perigee, the point its orbit at which it is closest to the Earth.

The red moon will be visible for 62 minutes, from 4:41 AM to 5:53 AM. This will be the last chance to see a red moon from Ireland until 2032.
