One of the country’s biggest supermarket chains SuperValu has said it will close two of its stores in Carlow and Clonmel which will result in the loss of 98 jobs.
The company which is part of the Musgrave’s group released a statement earlier this afternoon confirming that SuperValu on Kennedy Avenue, Carlow and SuperValu Marketplace, Clonmel will close their doors in January. A spokesperson for the company said that the retail environment in Carlow and Clonmel had become ‘challenging’ in the last number of years. They also said the company would enter a consultation period with the workers and assist them in finding alternative employment.
Meanwhile the mandate trade union has said the stores sudden closure are a rest loss and will make Christmas difficult for the workers affected.
