That’s rubbish! Galway City has lost its litter-free status

The latest survey of littering in Irish cities and towns indicates that Galway City lost its status as Ireland’s cleanest city, dropping from the 21st position (of 40 towns and cities) in 2014 to 33rd this month.

The survey was held by environmental group An Taisce for the organisation Irish Business Against Litter, and they identified the area by the canal walk beside Galway Cathedral as one of the most critical.

A spokesman of An Taisce mentioned that the city “could easily regain litter-free status if the many moderately littered sites were given a little extra care and attention e.g. Canal Road Upper, the bottle bank at Galway Shopping Centre and the Millennium Children’s Park”.

The survey studied 27 sites there, 14 obtained a Grade A (clean to European norms and virtual absence of litter), 9 were Grade B (moderately littered, scattered small amounts of litter), two Grade C (serious litter problem, accumulations of litter), and two Grade D (litter blackspot). The Grade D areas were the canal Walk beside Cathedral and Mulvoy Park shopping centre.
